  I Don't Speak Danish...(But I Eat It)!

Scarves...So Hot In Copenhagen Right Now

Have you ever noticed the drastic increase of tight-pant-wearing-foreign-language-speaking hipsters in New York City in the second half of March? There is a logical reason for this y'all! It is SXSW season and every foreign band worth blogging about makes their annual trek from their distant motherland to our glorious country for a week of whoring themselves out to the industry folk who gather in Austin for one of the world's largest music festivals. If the band is from Europe, they most likely have a layover in New York on their way to Bush country. Bands that are relatively well known in their home countries are forced to play gigs at tiny venues on the Lower East Side as they try to break the USA market.

Moi Caprice is one of these bands and on Tuesday, friends of Modfiend, Kap10Kurt invited us out to see their fellow Danes tear it up at Pianos. From the minute the band took the stage, it was obvious that they were not from around these parts. The haircuts were a little too asymetrical, the pants were a little too tight, and the scarves were a little too big for them to be mistaken for an average Brooklyn hipster band. Moi Caprice's songs were far better than the average Brooklyn band as well. Their meloncholy pop tunes provided a beautiful sonic landscape, which brought visions of pale, thin Euro boys peddling through the grey streets of Copenhagen on their way to buy some pickled herring...or perhaps a new chunky scarf.

The show's highlight was definately the song "Drama Queen", which brought the most energy out of the otherwise mellow band's performance. Overall, Moi Caprice sounded like the Cocteau Twins meets The Killers....after taking massive amounts of Ambien on a cold Danish day. Listen for yourself at the band's Myspace page: www.myspace.com/moicaprice
(A heads up, "thanks for the add" in Danish is "tak for add").
