  Pink Cowboy Boots

Pink Cowboy boots is a lovely French student film by Maria Larrea. Larrea plays a girl working in a radio station who has become obsessed with a man named Jean-Michel, played by Robin Courbet (keyboardist for AIR and Phoenix). The film also has a brief cameo by Sebastian Tellier! Although the film is entirely in French with no subtitles, the plot is very easy to understand.

  May Madness

MAY MADNESS! MAY MADNESS!
We Fiends have spring fever and so we made a little film strip for you of our favorite music videos and live performances this month.
This time we have:

-Shit Disco "OK"
In May I like to dance. To Shit Disco. Almost exclusively. Get used to it.

-Peter Bjorn & John "Young Folks" Live
Yeah, I know you've heard the song a couple MILLION times. But here it is again because it's the spring fever anthem and it reminds me of whistling through the park and the chirping of small birds.

-Softlightes "Heart Made of Sound"
One of my favorite new bands...you may remember the singer from his days in The Incredible Moses Leroy.

-Lil Mama "Fire" Live at Sin-e
Whoa. Lil Mama played at Sin-e and I wasn't there??!! See previous Lil Mama post.

-Dappled Cities Live at Filter's SXSW day party
I love these guys. Shitty video quality but it captures their amazing live show pretty well. Catch them when they move to the USA this summer!

  Coachella Lowdown

Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth

Hey y'all, we just got back from sunny California where we attended Coachella 2007. we are tired and sunburned but I have a full report for you, don't worry. Day one was a little crazy...we got there around 4pm and checked out the much hyped Arctic Monkeys, who I have seen a few times. I LOVE the new album, so I very much enjoyed their set of fresh songs. We also caught Digitalism, where I lost ten pounds in sweat in the dance tent, and Rufus Wainwright, whose lyrics made me tear up a little.

The Jesus and Mary Chain

Eventually, I ran over to VIP to check out one of my all time favorite bands, The Jesus and Mary Chain. Before I knew it, I was sandwiched between a member of Klaxons, the front man of the Arctic Monkeys, and one of the girls from the Like, singing at the top of my lungs to "Just Like Honey" with Scarlett Johansen on back up. That goes down on my list of most surreal Coachella moments for sure.

Bjork

I would tell you about how Interpol sounded but I was too busy running around the VIP area hunting celebrities. On this safari, I found the Hilton sisters, Adam Brody, Danny Devito, Jessica Alba, Ryan Cabrera, and some others. Did I talk to any of them? Um, no.

Then came Bjork. As the headliner of Friday night, she did not disappoint. The costumes! the voice! the choir! I love that little freak of nature!!!

The first band I saw on Saturday were MSTRKRFT, if you can even call them a band. They basically just stood in the dance tent and played their songs off of their laptops. But I'm not gonna hate! The crowd was going insane and dancing, so big ups to them. Anyway, don't spread this around, but unfortunately I missed one of my favorite artists ever--Ghostface Killah. If you were there, please don't tell me if he played "Greedy Bitches" because if he did, I might lose it. Where was I instead, you ask? I was here:

Arcade Fire

Arcade Fire was insane! And I'm not even one of those crazed fans who screams "PLAY 'WAKE UP'! PLAY 'WAKE UP'!" in the crowd at festivals (there were a ton of those people by the way and it was pretty annoying). I followed some friends up front to see them, planning on leaving to catch Ghostface after a couple of songs, but before I knew it I was hypnotized by Arcade Fire and couldn't have left if I tried. I can't really describe the Arcade Fire live experience except by saying that it was unlike anything I had ever seen. Go see them play at the first chance you get.

Sunday was the day of Coachella that I had been waiting for for a long time. Sure, I danced to the Klaxons, ate a gigantic meatball sub in front of the Lily Allen tent, saw Tara Reid looking like a train wreck, but none of that mattered once RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE took the stage.

Rage Against the Machine

They were one of my favorite bands in junior high and I fondly recall that my most prized possession was a Rage "Evil Empire" ringer tee with the words "Fear is Your Only God" on the back. Needless to say, I was ready for this Rage reunion to happen. I stationed myself at a strategic location in the VIP area. Close enough to be a part of the action and at a safe enough distance as to not be trampled in case a riot was to break out. Once Rage took the stage, I was in another world! Song lyrics that I thought had left my memory came flooding back to me and I was screaming at the top of my lungs, ready to set a boca burger stand or VIP tent on fire if Zach de la Rocha commanded it (FYI, he didn't, and I was slightly disappointed for that). He played a lot of the old hits including "Bulls on Parade" etc. and even went on an anti-Bush mini-rant. After the show, I was riding high and tried to take the revolution to the parking lot but no one else in my group was down for that. Oh well, maybe next year.

So that's it! Coachella was a crazy crazy experience and I highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to subject themselves to 108 degree weather and drunk hippies in Teva sandals doing back flips off of hay bails.
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR, INDIO!!
